Senior School Exam Week, 5 - 9 September 2011

Students in Years 11-13 have school exams this week. These are an integral part of the girls’ preparation for their NCEA exams in November and their results will provide valuable feedback and direction for further study. This year students do not have study leave during exam week. This means that girls will be in their usual timetabled classes if they do not have an exam scheduled.

Exam timetables (click here or see below) and rules (click here or see below) have been issued to all students.

Equipment
Pens, pencils, calculators etc only may be taken to your seat in the exam room in a clear sealed plastic bag. Check with your subject teachers about other equipment required and remember to bring it with you. You are not to take any paper into the exam room.

You may also bring another clear sealed plastic bag containing your cell phone (turned off), keys and id card. This is to be placed under your chair and may only be picked up in an emergency when you are instructed. At the end of the exam make sure you take it with you. If a cell phone rings (or makes any kind of noise) it will be treated as a serious breach of the exam rules.

School bags are not allowed in the exam room. For our school exams only, school bags may be left inside the exam room in the area indicated by your exam supervisor.

RULES
Our school exams are run under the same conditions as the NCEA external examinations.

  1. Wear correct school uniform – students in Year 11/12 will not be admitted to the examination room in incorrect uniform.
  2. Wait outside the examination room, then enter in silence when told to.
  3. You must remain absolutely silent throughout the examination. There is to be no communication between students. Raise your hand if you need a supervisor.
  4. Your behaviour must not disturb other students. For example, it is unacceptable to sniff throughout the examination – make sure you bring a handkerchief or tissues.
  5. There is to be NO eating.
  6. All students must remain in the examination room for the entire time. If you finish early, sit quietly and check your work.
  7. You may not leave the room and return during the examination. Go to the toilet before it starts.
  8. Make sure your name and class is on every answer sheet. You are responsible for handing in every sheet.
  9. At the end of the exam, stop writing immediately and stay sitting in silence until all papers are collected in.
  10. Instances of misconduct or disruptive behaviour during an exam will be investigated and may result in removal of grades for any standards associated with the exam.

Welcome to Avonside Girls' High School

Update: 29 January 2012
The new-look AGHS is almost ready to welcome staff and students for 2012. The major project of establishing the school back on the Avonside site is nearing completion. From 31 January staff will be on site setting up classrooms and resource areas while final site work is completed in readiness for the return of students from Tuesday 7 February. A planned orientation programme for each year level will assist familiarisation with the new layout.
Communication has been hampered in recent weeks with lack of email, internet and network access. We are hopeful of a speedy resolution within the next few days. The School Office (ph 3897199) is open each day from 8am  - 4.30pm. Access is from Avonside Drive and all visitors to the site are requested to report to the School Office which is clearly signposted.
Congratulations to the senior students of 2011 who performed so creditably in NCEA examinations, in such a disrupted and challenging year.
Following consultation with students, parents and staff towards the end of 2011, on the shape of the school day, new timings, which incorporate those aspects favoured by all groups, will be trialled for 2012:
Form time             8.30 - 8.45
P 1                          8.50 - 9.45
P 2                          9.50 - 10.45
Interval                10.45 - 11.10
p 3                        11.10 - 12.05
P 4                        12.10 - 1.05
Lunch                   1 .05 - 1.50
P 5                          1.50 - 2.45

Dedicated Avonside Girls' High School bus services will recommence on Monday 13 February. Details are posted here  http://www.metroinfo.co.nz/schools.html   or will be available from the school office in the week beginning 7 February.
We are excited about launching this new era in the history of Avonside Girls' High School and thank all those who have supported us and worked to bring this dream to fruition.

Update on progress to return to our school site on Avonside Drive (December 2011)

Great progress is being made at our Avonside site, with the relocation moving from a demolition phase to construction. Many relocatables have been placed in position and the new buildings (technology rooms, science laboratories, general classrooms and library) are progressing well. We are very grateful to the skilled workers whose collective efforts will ensure that we will be ready to return for the start of the 2012 school year, and be able to deliver the full curriculum in specialist classrooms.

The tight timeline for work completion allows staff on site to unpack and set up classrooms from 31 January. School will begin for students on Tuesday 7 February, and through that week each year level will have a specific time to attend for their initial assemblies, meeting with form teachers and to undergo an orientation programme to become familiar with the new layout.

Parents and members of the community are warmly invited to attend the Open Morning on Saturday 11 February at 10am, to hear from Ministry of Education personnel, structural and geotechnical engineers and to have a tour of the school.

We are very pleased to be returning home, and thank all who have provided support for us through this challenging year.

We wish all our families a restful and happy Christmas and look forward to a new year full of promise, growth and new beginnings.
