Using the Library Information Centre

  • Please leave your school bag on a shelf in the bag area. Keep valuables with you.
  • Food and drink are not permitted in the library.
  • Be considerate of other users - look after resources - work quietly.
  • Your Avonside Card is required for issuing books
  • Books are issued for three weeks
  • When using the L.I.C. during classtime a note is required from the teacher.
  • Cell phones are to be switched off.

Use of computers

  • Remember your log on name and password.
  • DO NOT tell others your password.
  • Use of computers in the L.I.C. is for research and class tasks (computer rooms are available for e-mail outside classtime).
  • When printing from websites, highlight the text required if the full article is not needed.
  • Go to File --> Print --> Select from, All, Pages or Selection --> Click OK.
  • Take care to click the Print icon once only - your work may take time if in a print queue.

Catalogue  Computers

There are four designated computers for searching the catalogue.  Please ask a librarian if you require assistance.
Hints:

  • Subject searches are general eg music.
  • Keyword searches are more specific eg rock music.
  • Combine several words.
  • One word per box will give matches that use any of these words.

Printing, copying and scanning

  • For black and white printing select the Library Laser and for colour printing select Colour Copier.
  • To print or copy, your account needs to be in credit, you may top up your account at the school office.

Fax

  • Available for faxing  requests for information relating to class work.
  • Check with the library staff before using.


Video and DVD Player

  • A selection of videos and DVDs is available for viewing.
  • Videos and DVDs are available for viewing outside of classtime.

Research

Research is about asking questions and finding answers.

Six steps to help you

  • Decide:
    • What do you want to find out? This will help you to form questions.
  • Find:
    • Suitable resources. Consider reference books, Information File, non-fiction, magazines and newspapers, CD ROMs, Internet sites and people.
  • Use:
    • Keywords, Index and Tables of Contents to find relevant information.
  • Record:
    • Take notes to answer your questions. Record sources of information for your bibliography.
  • Present:
    • Consider the ways you can present the information.
  • Evaluate:
    • Have you answered all your questions?

Print Resources

  • Reference:
    • Encyclopaedias, Dictionaries, Year Books, Atlases, Subject Reference material. Arranged using Dewey Decimal System.
  • Information File:
    • Articles from newspapers, magazines, periodicals, internet sites and pamphlets. Arranged alphabetically by subject.
  • Non Fiction:
    • Factual material. Arranged by subject using the Dewey Decimal System
  • Fiction, Short Stories, Quick Reads, Picture Books
    • Arranged alphabetically by author. Separate collection. Separate collection. Stored in wooden bins.
  • Periodicals and Magazines:
    • Current issues are on display. Previous issues are stored in blue boxes under windows in Reference area.
  • Books in other languages:
    • Fiction books in Te Reo Maori,  Chinese and Japanese.

Computer Resources

These sites can be accessed from the School Intranet.

There are many excellent databases available via the Christchurch City Library website. To access some databases you need to be a member of the library and have a PIN number on your card.
