Our Mission, Vision, and Values

Mission – To educate and empower young women to succeed now and into the future.

Vision – Young women at Avonside Girls’ High School are challenged to achieve personal excellence in a progressive and supportive learning environment.

Values – A strong sense of identity, courage, compassion, determination and leadership are encompassed in our poutama of values – Te whare mauri ora, our way of being at Avonside for staff and students.

We expect all members of our school community:
  • to be respectful in their words and actions towards others
  • to respect the rights and needs of others
  • to be inclusive and respectful of individual’s backgrounds, ethnicity, gifts and talents
  • to be respectful of the school property and environment, making sure that their actions make it a pleasant place for others to work and live in
  • to be respectful of the school’s name, by ensuring that the uniform is worn correctly and by ensuring that words and actions do nothing to harm the school’s good name
AT AVONSIDE, WE HAVE FOUR POU:

POU / HOUSES

SHEPPARD

Katherine Sheppard, New Zealand’s most prominent suffragist, whose efforts paved the way for women’s right to vote, inspired this pou/kōwhaiwhai.

COOPER

This pou/kōwhaiwhai design is inspired by the life and legacy of Dame Whina Cooper, a revered kuia and activist.

MANSFIELD

This pou reflects the life and work of Katherine Mansfield, one of New Zealand’s most influential modernist writers.

BATTEN

Batten honors the legacy of Jean Batten, New Zealand’s most celebrated aviator, who became a global icon in the 1930s through her record-breaking solo flights.

AVONSIDE VALUES

A strong sense of identity, courage, compassion, determination and leadership are encompassed in our poutama of values – Te whare mauri ora, our way of being at Avonside for staff and students.
