Kia ora Koutou

In this newsletter there are some important articles – especially in regard to whooping cough in our community.

I want to highlight the parent workshops advertised in this newsletter. We have had consent education workshops with our senior students and this is an important topic for whanau – Tuesday 27th is the workshop.

Please note that this week we have our Open Night on Thursday and a Staff only day on Friday. We then have King’s birthday weekend with Monday 2nd June as a public holiday.

Students finish school for the week on Thursday 29th May at the end of period 4. Thank you to those who are helping with Open Night. We look forward to seeing our students back on Tuesday 3rd June.

This week we welcome Roma Mitchell College students from Australia. They are spending a week with our students focusing on leadership and culture.

Thank you to all our community who are supporting winter sport teams. We cannot provide the opportunities we do without your support. If anyone else wishes to help please contact our director of sport PTS@avonside.school.nz We are thrilled our football field is back in action and that our rugby field will be soon.

I want to emphasise our school value of Kia Manaaki both on the sports fields and in communication with our staff. As a school we are committed to working in partnership with whanau for better outcomes. Please remember that our student coaches and staff are giving up time to coach and manage and umpire and support them. Our players need to hear positive encouragement from the sideline towards them and our coaches. In the same way our teachers and staff work really hard – whether it is Carol on the end of the phone when you ring or a teacher receiving an email and they deserve a respectful conversation. We know there are times when whanau are frustrated but we need to keep everyone safe in a conversation. We are here to help.
